New Satellite in the UK from Toshiba
This neat looking computer from Toshiba carries the Satellite name on with the model number U500 1EX, it comes with a decent sized 13.3 inch display with multi touch features and is powered by an Intel Core 13 330 processor, so this is not a basic laptop by any means and in fact could easily compete with some of other big brands.

First Toshiba caved on Blu-ray for the home, and now they’re taking the sad show portable. The once-great defender of the HD-DVD crown has begun adopting the format for its laptops, bringing the discs to the P500 (a member of the Satellite family). The system — which was released originally in June sans Blu-ray — sports an 18.4 inch (1920 x 1080) display, HDMI REGZA link, a Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and a slew of the standard ports and wireless radios. Toshiba confirm Blu-ray notebooks and players in 2009
Toshiba have gone public with their plans to develop Blu-ray devices, as they were tipped to be back in July. The company has applied for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), the marketing and promotion organization behind the format, together with confirming that they intend to launch both standalone Blu-ray players and notebooks with integrated Blu-ray drives sometime during 2009.
Toshiba’s involvement with Blu-ray has been a long time coming, not least because the company was responsible for the rival HD-DVD format. However HD-DVD failed to find favor with buyers, and so around eighteen months after announcing their format was dead, Toshiba have jumped onto the Blu-ray bandwagon.
In their press release, below, Toshiba highlight both the growth of Blu-ray products and the demand from consumers and retailers for them to produce their own range as key motivators. Back when HD-DVD collapsed, Toshiba had suggested that it would focus on digital delivery rather than another disc-style format.

Toshiba Applies to Join Blu-ray Disc Association
10 Aug, 2009Tokyo—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) announced today that the company has applied for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and plans to introduce products that support the Blu-ray format.
As a market leader in digital technologies, Toshiba provides a wide range of advanced digital products, such as DVD recorders and players, HDTVs and notebook PCs that support a wide range of storage devices, including hard disk drives (HDD), DVD, and SD Cards. In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA.
Toshiba aims to introduce digital products that support the Blu-ray format, including BD players and notebook PCs integrating BD drives, in the course of this year. Details of the products, including the timing of regional launches, are now under consideration. We will make announcements in due course.

Toshiba Satellite A500, U500, L500 and L550 notebooks get official
Toshiba UK have unveiled the company’s latest Satellite notebooks, the A500, U500, L500 and L550, with screen sizes ranging from 13.3-inches to 17.3-inches. The laptops start with the the 13.3-inch WXGA ultraportable U500, shown here, with a choice of Core 2 Duo and Pentium CPUs, up to 4GB RAM, 500GB storage and optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics.

The 15.6-inch WXGA L500 comes next, with either a Core 2 Duo T6500, AMD Turion Dual Core or Pentium T4200, up to 4GB RAM and 320GB hard-drive. It too has optional HD 4570 graphics. Next is the 16-inch WXGA A500, with 2.16GHz or 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo processors, up to 4GB RAM and 500GB hard-drive, plus Radeon HD 4650 graphics on selected models and an A4-sized keyboard.
Finally, the 17.3-inch WXGA L550 gets a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB RAM and 500GB hard-drive, plus a standard ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 GPU. It, too, has the A4 keyboard. All models have a choice of WiFi, from basic b/g through to a/g/n, and optional Bluetooth. Full specs in the press release below.
The new Toshiba Satellite range will be available in the UK from late July, priced from £599 ($977) for the U500, £449 ($732) for the L500, £599 ($977) for the A500 and £699 ($1,140) for the L550.
