Most of you have probably seen the Broadcom Crystal HD Accelerator card before as it’s been in the news on many occasions. This is the card that gives you 1080p HD video playback for your netbooks (including Flash).

This card has a model name of BCM70012 and you used to be able to buy them on Ebay for around $30 but now they are in short supply. When Pinetrail netbooks hit the scene, a newer card was announced with model no. BCM70015.

Up until now I had never seen this new card and the only difference up until now was one or two extra supported video formats. Turns out there is a physical difference too. It’s half size. The original BCM70012 was full sized. One user, samsonite801, on the EeeUser forums has a photo of one he pulled out from his ASUS Eee PC 1005PR, with ships with this card and a HD 1366 x 768 display.

That is good news as not every netbook will have full sized mini PCI-e slots, let alone free ones. I remember one user hacking parts of his Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t away so he could fit the full sized BCM70012 into the half-size PCI-e slot where the Wi-Fi originally was.

The ASUS Eee PC 1005PR is the latest netbook from ASUS and only the second to sport a high resolution 10.1” 1366 x 768 display. It’s also the first Eee PC that ships with a Broadcom Crystal HD card built it.. well in some cases, that is. If you check out the comments on Amazon.com, you’ll see there are many people who have not received the card inside their 1005PR netbooks.

The thing is, I’m sure many consumers will buy this ASUS Eee PC 1005PR netbook and not have a clue about the HD card, let alone how to even set it up for HD playback. They aren’t going to have the faintest idea that theirs might not even have the card inside.

Early last year System76 launched the Starling NetBook, one of the few 10-inch netbooks ever to be sold with Ubuntu (Netbook Remix). This year in May, they will be launching the 10-inch Starling EduBook.

The Starling EduBook is a rebranded Classmate PC and is tailored for children / learning due to its rugged design and carry handle. It has typical netbook specs and includes Ubuntu Education Edition Netbook Remix 10.04 which is the latest version (to be released this month).

This is not the touch screen tablet convertible model but it is packing the latest Pinetrail platform.

Alternate has rolled out a new budget-friendly netbook for the German market. Dubbed as the Mobile Mini, this mini laptop offers a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, an integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics card, a 1GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a 1.3MP webcam, a 3-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports, WiFi, a 3-cell battery and ships with FreeDOS. The Mobile Mini sells for 199 Euro (about $270).

If you’ve ever had a yearning for a slime covered netbook, today’s your lucky day. Dell’s Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition — which is absolutely SpongeBob-approved — is now up for order starting at $329. As for specs, it’s pretty much a standard Mini 10v underneath, with a 10.1-inch (1,024 x 600 resolution) display, Windows XP Home, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a GMA950 graphics set, WiFi, 3-cell battery, 1.3 megapixel webcam and a totally played 1.6GHz Atom processor. Oh, and a slimed lid and palm rest, which are likely the one two aspects that truly matter here.
