Motorola Android tablet may Introduce soon
Motorola may be in the process of designing a tablet that will run Google’s Android OS, says a company executive. The executive was answering questions at a conference when the subject came up. He also revealed that Motorola is focusing heavily on Android. The potential device, according to the executive, would be about 7 to 10 inches and would be intended to supplement a user’s TV experience.
This rumor has come about at the same time as another rumor concerning Android devices made by Motorola. Motorola is allegedly working on two new high-end Droid phones that will be released sometime in July with Verizon as their carrier. There has been speculation that one of the phones has already been seen by the public in the form of a prototype found in a gym earlier this week.
Either way, this summer looks to be very interesting in terms of Android devices.

MIT Brings Future of Lasers to Computing

Physicists at MIT have broken new ground in the exciting field of lasers. They have successfully shown that germanium laser technology can be extended to use in personal computing, sometime in the near future. This will have vast implications in the world of hardware.
Many hardware analysts are noticing that we appear to be reaching a sort of limit for data transfer speed. The solution thus far has been reducing and optimizing the semiconductors that transfer the electrical signals. MIT’s new potential solution: germanium lasers.
Germanium lasers operate at a frequency capable of transmitting data through optical signals as opposed to the traditional route of electrical signals. This manages to save energy, because there is no need for additional power to send data faster. This also removes traditional lasers from computers which have undesirable materials, like gallium arsenide.
So far this is more of a proof of concept than a market prototype. The cost of implementing this will likely be highly expensive, as it requires intricate patterns to be etched onto silicon chips. Nevertheless, we can always wait for the promise of the glamorous future and its germanium lasers.

Video: Kohjinsha dual-screen swivel netbook prototype hands-on

Sure, gScreen is slowly mastering the art of grainy video teasers with its dual-panel portable, but here at its CEATEC booth, Kohjinsha’s got quite a looker of its own, on display in a very clear and well-lit case. We’re looking at two 10.1-inch LCDs each capable of outputting at either 1024 x 600 or 1366 x 768 resolution, and if one is all you need, it’s a sliding mechanism to hide the other monitor. What’s more, the base of it swivels, although we didn’t get to see it twist behind 15 degrees so we’re not sure the extent of its flexibility. Powering the DirectX 10-compatible little guy is an AMD Athlon MV-40, along with a 2.5-inch SATA HDD, up to 4GB DDR2 memory, and Windows 7 Home Premium, all for a hair under four pounds. There is a bit of bulk in its height, about 1.7 inches at its tallest and 0.75 inches at its shortest, but that’s something we’re willing to live with considering the value we’re getting with the screens. The rep we spoke with says it’s still in prototype phase at this point with no price or release date on the books, unfortunately, and the battery life is something of a mystery — we can’t imagine powering two bright displays is doing its energy reserves any favor. Apple tablet rumors redux: 10.7-inch display, iPhone OS underneath
At this point, it’s difficult to say exactly what we believe. Just a fortnight ago, we heard that the so-called Apple tablet would ship with a 9.6-inch display and a P.A. Semi processor, and now iLounge is hearing from “trusted sources” that something other than that is true. The latest round of maybe-sorta-probably-not-true whispers is that the current prototype of the device boasts a 10.7-inch display and a resolution near 720p. Of course, we’ve no idea where Apple would source a capacitive touchscreen of that size, but we wouldn’t put anything past El Jobso. Moving on, we’re told that iPhone OS will be used, signifying that this will be more of an advanced media player / light communication device than a full-on netbook competitor. Finally, we’re told that a 3G and non-3G version will be offered, and if Mr. Boss signs off on it, it could be announced as early as January with a June / July ship date. Oh, and it’ll come pre-loaded with Unicorn-approved applications and a vial of fairy dust — huzzah!

Video: Intel’s four-screen laptop prototype hands-on
Well, here’s something you don’t see every day: Intel’s got a concept laptop here at IDF that features three OLED touchscreens below the 15-inch screen. In keeping with the hype of the moment, the primary idea is to run widgets and other passive apps on the little screens, but they’re actually integrated with the main screen, so you can flick content up to view it full-size, and even use the mouse to interact with the widgets instead of your fingers. It’s definitely cool, but it’s also definitely a little odd in practice — although Intel says they’re talking to OEMs, things will have to be significantly refined before this can hit production.
