Lenovo U160 notebook with new CULV processors update

The 11.6-inch Lenovo IdeaPad U160 notebook, sporting an all new design with updated Intel CULV processors - Core i3, i5 and i7 processors and a few others.

The design borrows the chiclet keyboard from the current Lenovo lineup (shame they couldn’t make it a tad larger - I mean, it is still missing keys, F12) and retaining an etched pattern on an aluminum lid. Images show a battery that is almost flush. I really hope that that is not a 3-cell battery. If true that fixes an issue some may have had with the U150 which jutted out directly underneath quite a bit. The Lenovo IdeaPad U160 laptop will start shipping at the start of next month (June) priced from $699.

Lenovo IdeaPad U160 Specs

Dell adds dual-core SU1400 CPU, other options to Inspiron 11z

Dell’s 11.6-inch Inspiron 11z just went on sale last month, and already the outfit is opening up the options for those not entirely pleased with the single $399 model. Starting today, a $479 configuration is available to ship with a 250GB HDD and Vista Home Premium (with a Windows 7 upgrade, of course), and if that’s still not enough, prospective customers can soon select their 11z in a variety of colors. We’re talking Alpine White, Ice Blue, Jade Green, New Cherry Red, Passion Purple and Promise Pink, with the latter contributing $5 to breast cancer research. As for optional hardware upgrades, you can slot a dual-core Pentium SU1400 CPU in there alongside 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. As of this very moment, Dell has yet to open up the CTO doors, but we’re guessing an admin is on that as we speak. Right, Dell?

Samsung X420, X520 CULV laptops outed

Now, details are slightly thin here (as well as machine translated), but we’re getting word of two new on the horizon — the 14-inch Samsung laptopsX420 and the 15.6-inch X520. The X420 will supposedly boast a 1.3GHz Intel Pentium dual-core SU2700, Intel GMA X4500M graphics, 3GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive, with not an optical drive in sight. Similarly the X520 will also feature the ultra-low power consumption SU2700 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 320GB HDD. The X520 will weigh in at 2.09 kg with its 6-cell battery, while the X420 will supposedly weigh 1.7 kg. We’re hearing these bad boys are coming to European soil in mid-October, and while we don’t have any solid pricing information — both have been estimated to run somewhere in the €700 range (around $1,000).

Intel rebrands: Core i3, i5, i7 are in, Centrino on the outs

Intel’s doing some spring cleaning on its branding structure, adding new Cores on the block. Joining the high-level Core i7 series will be the mid range Core i5 in the coming months and the lower-end Core i3’s early next year. To be more specific, the Lynnfield chipsets will be either i5 or i7 depending on the feature set, Clarkfield mobile chips will be i7, and the 32nm Arrandale will at least at first fall under i3. Of course, with the new gang in town, some older monikers will be going wayside, and getting the slow fade out are Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, and Centrino, the latter being eventually marginalized for WiMAX and WiFi products only. Making the cut are Celeron, Pentium, and the ever-resilient Atom names. We’re a bit sad to know there will never be a Core 2 Dodeca, but hey, it’s only a name, right?. Hit up the read link for more details, including a video interview with Intel’s VP of Marketing Deborah Conrad.

Intel debuts three new Core 2 Duo procs, new SU2700 ULV chip and GS40 Express Chipset

It doesn’t take an Intel-salaried futurist to see that extended battery life and thin form factors are kind of a big deal going forward, while price and performance aren’t getting swept away either — it’s been basically the ongoing state of the laptop industry since time began (as Intel has so helpfully illustrated for us). What is new is that form factors and bang-for-buck is truly getting wild of late, and Intel’s latest crop of chips should help keep moving things along. In the high end, Intel’s Core 2 Duo processor is breaking 3GHz with the 3.06GHz T9900 in the high end, alongside the new P9700 and P8800 chips. Meanwhile, the Pentium SU2700 is a 1.3GHz ULV chip for stuffing in everybody’s next low-cost thin and light, while Intel is also introducing the GS40 Express Chipset as a scaled-down, lower power alternative to the GS45, likely for similar aims. No word on price points or availability just yet.
