HP Plans for a WebOS tablet not for netbook
Hewlett Packard has acquired both Palm and its WebOS platform, but according to an HP executive in Taiwan, will not be manufacturing any type of netbook with this technology. Instead, HP has plans to create a tablet that is based on the WebOS operating system.
Monty Wong, the Vice President of the Personal Computing Systems Group at HP Taiwan, said that an HP WebOS tablet might be ready by October of this year, but did not offer any further details regarding the device’s release. More details are expected to surface later in July, after the Palm acquisition is finalized.
Furthermore, Wong believes that netbooks are too similar in functionality to laptops, so it wouldn’t make sense to play in that arena. Also, making a WebOS-based netbook that is operated by a mouse and keyboard seems silly because WebOS is a touch-based operating system. It’s better for HP to create a tablet, since touchscreen netbooks and laptops haven’t been big hits in the market thus far anyway.

Google Chrome OS Netbooks Priced Under $400
According to Google Chief Eric Schmidt, netbooks running on Google’s new Chromium operating system that are expected to be on sale in retail stores by the end of this year or early next year will be priced in the $300-$400 range. “Those prices are completely determined by the costs of the glass, the costs of the processor and things like that, but in our case Chrome OS and Android are free so there is no software tax associated with all of this,” Schmidt says.

Google introduced the Chrome operating system two months ago and boasted it as a lightweight, browser-based OS that could boot up in seven seconds or less. The company has not yet revealed who they will be partnering with to manufacture their new netbooks, but Acer has said that it expects to offer about a million of these devices this year.
Google’s trying hard to get into the netbook market and is up for a fight against its competitors, namely Windows-based devices. Guess we’ll just have to wait to see Google’s latest creation.

Apple Releases Huge Security Update

If you are using a Mac right now, be sure to get Apple’s latest security update. The update, released today, patches a whopping 92 vulnerabilities, a third of them critical. This security update actually breaks a record established in March 2008—that update patched a mere 90 vulnerabilities.
The latest update fixed flaws in 42 aspects of the operating system, from QuickTime to AppKit. 18 of the vulnerabilities were Leopard-specific, 29 were Snow Leopard-specific, and the remaining 45 affected both Leopard and Snow Leopard (thanks a lot, Apple, for just leaving us Tiger users out all alone with no security updates).
More than 40% of the vulnerabilities were critical and could have been used by attackers to hijack a Mac.
The update did not come as a surprise to many analysts. Apple typically releases updates to iTunes and QuickTime before it releases new products that rely on iTunes. Analysts have also predicted that an iPhone update will be released this week, too.
