Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3T netbook review

Joanna over at Engadget has a review up for the new 10.1” Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t tablet netbook convertible.

She has the model with an Intel Atom N470 processor, 4-cell battery and Windows 7 Home Premium, so you can take advantage of the multi-touch screen. This model is priced at $649 at Lenovo.com.

Thanks to no ghastly 8-cell tumor the S10-3t weighs nicely and is comfortable to use in two hands. Capacitive touchscreen is responsive and flicking through web pages is enjoyable. 4-Cell battery lasted a solid 4.5 hours. It went downhill from here.

The Intel Atom N470 didn’t help speed up the system and actually turned out slower than the HP Mini 210 with the default Atom N450 processor. Built-in accelerometer worked poorly Joanna resorted to manually pressing the button on the screen bezel for rotation. Keyboard felt cramped and flexy, trackpad is too small. Poor viewing screen angles. (very important for a good portrait mode viewing experience).

Dell Mini 10v Netbook Gets Touchscreen Mod

With the first and second generation of netbooks (9-inch and early 10-inch ones) there were all sorts of hacks and mods including plenty of touch screen mods. As today’s netbooks get slimmer so does the possiblity for modding. Ever see a touchscreen mod on the Eee PC seashell series? There just not enough room for one. How about the 10-inch Dell Mini series? Barely enough space as well but one brave modder decided to put a Dell Mini 10v to the test and successfully installed a touchscreen. That’s the first as far as I’m aware and perhaps the last!?

Weatherjx, the modder, comments on how well put together the Mini 10v is that is there is barely any space left inside, actually not enough in this case he had to snip parts of the casing off to fit in the touchscreen controller board.

I see a couple of people comment how useless a touchscreen might be on a netbook but actually it really is quite handy as I’ve learnt with the T91MT. At least for web browsing I found myself barely using the trackpad and just touched on the screen to scroll and click links. Probably even better on the Dell Mini 10v as it’s buttonless trackpad gets its fair share of complaints.

Intel may be working on a dual core Atom chip for netbooks

Since day one, Intel’s Atom chips have come in two flavors: desktop and mobile. While the desktop chips have come in dual core and single core versions, the Atom chips designed for netbooks and other portable devices have traditionally been single core only. But it looks like that could soon change.PC Inpact reports that Intel may be working on a dual core Atom chip for netbooks. It will reportedly be called something like the Atom N500, which makes sense, since the latest dual core chip for desktops is called the Atom D510 — and most of the company’s netbook-specific chips have started with the letter N, such as the Atom N270, N280, N450, and N470.

Up until now, any PC maker that wanted to build a laptop with a dual core Atom processor had to use a desktop chip such as the Atom 330 dual core CPU found in the Asus Eee PC 1201N. But those chips tend to draw more power and generate more heat than chips designed for netbooks.

Bear in mind, even with two cores, an Atom chip is an Atom chip. They’re designed as low cost, low power alternatives to beefier processors. As such, I’d expect the Atom N500 to be a little faster than a single core Atom processor and better at multitasking and other tasks which can benefit from multiple cores. But don’t expect miracles.

There’s no word on how much the Atom N500 would cost or when it would be released. And right now, this is just a rumor, although PC Inpact reports that the information comes from companies that work with Intel.

Lenovo IdeaPad G 9 netbook

Although Lenovo could have targeted its ODM business confidence for the production of the new IdeaPad netbooks G, the Chinese company changed course, choosing for this task Quanta Computers. In addition to that, then AU Optronics will also participate in the design of the IdeaPad G netbooks as a supplier of LCD 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch LED backlight technology. This coincides with the declaration of the president of AUO, released late July, that his company would produce 10-inch display for netbooks in the third quarter.

Best of all, at least two Lenovo launches IdeaPad G netbook , with size 8.9-and 10.1-inch Intel-based Centrino Atom and a 160GB hard drive. We can assume that the processor will choose the version N270 at 1.6GHz or, why not, a 330 dual core at 1.6GHz. Will be given four different colors, including white and pink, and supposedly black and blue.
