It’s taken longer than we thought for a honest-to-goodness NVIDIA ION-powered within arm’s reach, but sure enough the HP Mini 311 accomplishes just that. Laptop’s managed one of the first reviews, and much like what the site intimated with earlier benchmarks, you’re looking at a surprisingly capable and sleek $400 netbook with good battery life. In fact, the only major complaint seems to be a trackpad that’s a bit too rough for the reviewer’s tastes — probably a sacrifice worth making if you’re definitely in the market for a new ultraportable right now. If you’ve ever had a yearning for a slime covered netbook, today’s your lucky day. Dell’s Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition — which is absolutely SpongeBob-approved — is now up for order starting at $329. As for specs, it’s pretty much a standard Mini 10v underneath, with a 10.1-inch (1,024 x 600 resolution) display, Windows XP Home, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a GMA950 graphics set, WiFi, 3-cell battery, 1.3 megapixel webcam and a totally played 1.6GHz Atom processor. Oh, and a slimed lid and palm rest, which are likely the one two aspects that truly matter here.

Still more netbooks / notebooks coming out of IFA 2009. Here’s another one from Chinese company Optima with their thin and light 12.1” Optima Mini Laptop which aims for MacBook Air like proportions. This looks exactly the same as that iiView A2 12-incher that went on sale in Australia a while back.

While it is 12-inch in size it’s still got the basic netbook innards: Atom N270 processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, 1.3MP Webcam. Unlike the iiView A2 this one ships with Windows XP.

The folks at Netbooknews.it have got their hands on a pre-production sample of the 11.6” ION (LE) powered HP Mini 311 netbook or rather the Compaq 311 since this is in Germany. There is not much said apart from the single jack for microphone and headphone might annoy some people.

Their model came with Windows 7 and 2GB RAM which accounted for better benchmark results compared to the Samsung N510 with Windows XP. When the Mini 311 goes on sale it will come with Windows XP.

Timm on Tech has another update on his interesting HP Mini 1000 DIY tablet mod. This time he has fitted a case around the display which was also the casing for the netbook itself. He also talks a little about further updates he’s done. The tablet is still not ready to be thrown into the bag just yet though!

Really makes me want to go buy a cheap netbook and try it myself but I don’t have a clue about electronics!
