The iPad: Apple’s Answer to Netbooks
Given the obvious lack of an external keyboard and trackpad, it might be easy to say that Apple’s iPad is a separate, stand-alone device, trailblazing through unknown territory. On the other hand, if given only the specs of said device, one might draw the conclusion that Apple finally decided to make a net-Macbook.
Rafe Needleman stated it best when he wrote, ” [The iPad] is clearly Apple’s answer to the Netbook, not a play to breathe life into the 10-years dead tablet market. The iPad is cheaper than a standard Mac, does less, and is easier to maintain than a full-on Mac. These are the same selling points you get from Netbook makers. Sure, they’ll say, a Netbook does less than a full Windows laptop, but it’s only $399.”
There will definitely be a bunch of people that say that an iPad is an iPad is an iPad, and that we’re just projecting our opinions on the subject. It’s an easy statement to make given that the iPad looks totally different from all other netbook designs out there. Then again, Apple has shown us time and again that it’s not a traditional PC company.

Microsoft CEO Signs a Mac

Steve Ballmer may annoy Apple users sometimes–he said that the iPhone was prohibitively expensive–but I really cannot deny that he can be pretty amusing. He certainly does not fit the stereotype of the staid, laid-back CEO. Ballmer is quite the opposite, always very enthusiastic. I first found out about him when I saw a YouTube video of him at an event during which he ran on stage yelling, “I love this company!” Even though I don’t really care for the products his company sells, I do find his enthusiasm refreshing.
The latest amusing thing Ballmer has done involves Apple–specifically, a MacBook Pro computer. At a technology council meeting at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee, a student boldly approached Ballmer and asked him to sign his computer. The student then presented Ballmer with a MacBook Pro and promised that it had Windows on it. Ballmer laughed and signed the computer, adding a note with his signature that read, “Need a new one?” Somebody recorded a video of this amusing encounter and posted it to YouTube.
You have to wonder: what would Steve Jobs have done if he had been asked to sign a Windows computer? I would like to think that he would have been as good-natured about the whole thing as Ballmer was.
Mac OS X 10.6.2 hacked to admit Atom support
Mac OS X 10.6.2 hacked to allow Atom support

No bonus points for calling this one, but it looks like Atom support has returned to Mac OS X 10.6.2 — less than two weeks after it was unceremoniously removed to the dismay of hackintoshers. Of course, this new “fix” doesn’t come courtesy of Apple, and it does take the art of hackintoshing to some risky new levels. Developed by a member of the InsanelyMac forum, the hack is actually a full-on replacement kernel for OS X, which means it will require a good bit of fine tuning to get installed, and some considerable faith in the developer on your part. It does seem like quite a few trailblazers are happy with it, however, so hit up the links below if you’re ready to take the plunge.

Apple about to unveil refreshed plastic MacBooks?
The white plastic MacBook has been looking pretty lonely at the bottom of Apple’s lineup ever since all the unibodies went Pro, but we’d been hearing Apple had some grand plans for the low-end — and now AppleInsider says revised MacBooks in a thinner, sleeker shell have hit manufacturing and could launch “in the coming weeks” alongside that rumored iMac refresh. AI also says there are hints at a new-school integrated battery and a white plastic case, but we’ll see what happens — anyone think Apple might cut prices below $999?
