Dell Sparta and Athens netbooks | Dell Roadmap Reveals ARM Netbooks

A leaked Dell roadmap has revealed future products in their MID / Netbook Tablet roadmap, of which all are powered by either ARM processors coupled with Android or Moblin OSes (MeeGo now). Two netbooks (smartbooks) are scheduled for a release later this year.

First is the “Sparta” tablet netbook which sports an usual flip design and a non widescreen 11-inch 1024 x 768 display, 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This one is scheduled for a release in August this year. The following month in September, the “Athens” netbook is scheduled with the same specs though it doesn’t seem to be a tablet. It’ll weigh less than 0.9kg / 1.98 pounds.

The rest are tablet devices and one phone. The Dell Mini 5Streak” tablet launches in the US and Europe this Summer and a month later in China. A couple of 7” tablets are scheduled in August and January next year.

New MacBook Pros Will Be Arriving Soon?

This is nothing but a rumor right now, but, like the majority of Apple rumors, is very exciting. Apple is allegedly getting ready to update its MacBook Pro line of laptops. The new MacBook Pros will have the latest Intel processors, the mobile Core i5 and/or Core i7. Other laptop makers—HP, Toshiba, Dell, and Sony—have already moved to using these new chips.

The speculation seems legitimate because blogs are citing new part numbers that have been independently confirmed as real. The new part numbers could also indicate that the update will happen in the near future. The updates will be for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros, according to some blogs.

Also, Best Buy is showing certain 15.4-inch MacBook Pros to be out of stock, both online and in their stores. It remains to be seen if this is indicative of an imminent update.

About the Rumors, Dell and HP Not Going Anywhere

Yesterday there were rumors that Dell and HP were going to leave 10-inch netbooks behind and HP was going to shift focus on 11-inch notebooks powered by AMD chips. It is ridiculous at it sounded and both companies have responded to the issue.

A dell rep said the Dell Mini 10 is “not going anywhere” over at Electronista and the follow below is a response over at HotHardware:

The Mini 10 netbook remains an important member of our mobile platform portfolio and is a great secondary companion device as people appreciate the compact size and the ability to stay connected on the go, whether they are traveling across town or across the country. Also just an FYI, wireless carriers around the world increasingly are offering netbooks with built in Mobile Broadband.  For example last week at CTIA, T-Mobile announced its first netbook offering will be the Dell Mini 10, available through T-Mobiles online and select stores. Clear also announced that will carry the Mini 10 with Built-in WiMax support for the Clear network. Dell is committed to offering a variety of products so people have a choice of devices to meet their computing needs.

As for HP, Sascha from Netbooknews.com has got news from HP that this isn’t true for them either (on twitter):

The Digitimes news about HP is stopping its’ netbook production is complete bollocks.I just got the confirmation from my HP contact.

HP and Dell Not So Keen On Netbooks Anymore

Sounds like bollocks to me but according to Digitimes sources, Dell and HP aren’t so keen on netbooks anymore (heard that before with Dell on a prevoius occasion). Dell is said to be “reducing investments” in 10-inch netbooks while HP is said to be considering scrapping 10-inch netbooks in favour of 11.6-inch AMD powered notebooks instead because of slim profits from Pine Trail based netbooks.

The mobile carrier T Mobile is offering the cool Dell Mini 10 netbook for under $200 on a two year mobile broadband contract.
